PanPastel Colors are a very versatile medium when it comes to mixed media. On this canvas piece, I limited myself to basic products, like gesso, molding paste & embossing ink. Apply a thin layer of gesso over the canvas. Use a sheet of paper kitchen towel as a mask, to cover the bottom half. Using a palette knife, apply a generous but smooth layer of Golden Absorbent Ground on the top half, going over the edge of the kitchen towel, to obtain an irregular separation line. Leave to dry.

Color the entire surface of the canvas using several PanPastel tints (color reference numbers with .8). Carefully blend the colors with a clean Sofft tool. Spray fixative lightly over the colors to isolate them.

Using a piece of kitchen paper towel, create a mask that only reveals the top corners of the canvas. Apply Golden Soft Gel (Matte) on a stamp using a sponge brush. Stamp in the top corners making sure you stamp all the way to the mask. Wash the stamp immediately, don’t leave the gel medium to dry on the stamp.

Leave the gel medium on the canvas to dry fully. Accent the top corners using the same palette of PanPastel colors but using their pure colors (.5) this time. The gel medium will act as a resist. Blend the colors carefully using a clean Sofft tool. Spray lightly with fixative to isolate the colors.

Using a palette knife and a circle stencil, apply molding paste on the bottom half of the canvas. Again, use a sheet of kitchen/paper towel as a mask to protect the rest of the canvas. Let dry.

Colorize the circles with metallic PanPastels. Apply the first color using a round (No.1) Sofft Knife. Add shading and highlights mixing several metallic PanPastel colors. Accent the circles by shading with metallic oil pastel, by applying the oil pastels on the edge of the circles. Blend using your finger.

Stamp with embossing ink in the area where you want to add embellishments. Apply a darker (shade .3 or extra dark .1) PanPastel color by dabbing it to avoid the embossing ink to move. Heat-dry to fix the embossing ink. Take any excess PanPastel away by gently wiping with a clean Sofft sponge.

Add splatters of Ecoline and acrylic paint.

France Papillon lives in Belgium and started as a full time mixed media artist in 2010.

What is Mixed Media? The term mixed media in art stands for the processing of different materials in the creation of a work. Here, colors with collages, stickers with adhesive work, metal and plastic, canvas and paper can be some examples of the combination of different media. There are almost no limits to the imagination. The important thing here is that the substrate can support the materials. Working base here can be wood, cardboard, paper or canvases. Likewise, the bonds of the various media must hold well. Examples of connecting elements are called glue, screws, yarn or epoxy resin. Mixed Media on canvas Canvases are also ideal for mixed media work. For robust works with protruding elements, where screws are used through the canvas, one should resort to a stable frame with 4 cm and a correspondingly stable canvas (COTTON CLASSIC is ideal).

Depending on the paint chosen, preferences for the choice of canvas could also form. On a canvas with a dark linen look, as with RAW canvas, opaque acrylics look especially good. Glazing or barely opaque oil paints, however, go down there. Discover CRAZY CANVAS in our Shop.

In what order do I apply the mixed media? Here, too, the decisive factor is which materials and colors are used. Oil paints take a very long time to dry. If you want to paint the canvas over the entire surface, the drying time must therefore be taken into account before other elements can be placed on it. An alternative would therefore be to first attach the haptic elements and only then paint these and the canvas. With acrylic paint, the situation is quite different. The fast drying makes it possible to work spontaneously. Alternating between painting and applying layers is therefore very easy with acrylic. Acrylic and oil paints have the advantage that they hold on different surfaces. So you can also paint figures, fabric and other materials afterwards.

In this example we are working with a 60x80cm frame. Preparation of the canvas We decided not to prime the canvas and work directly on the unprimed surface.
